Executive Director

Utility Scale Solar Energy Coalition of Ohio | Remote / Columbus, OH

Position Summary:

Founded in 2021, the Utility Scale Solar Energy Coalition of Ohio (“USSEC”) is a fast-growing statewide trade association representing nearly 30 solar development companies actively developing utility-scale solar projects in the Buckeye state. The trade association supports the solar industry by fostering constructive dialogue with the Ohio Power Siting Board, the Ohio General Assembly, and with the executive branch and with key stakeholders across the state.

The USSEC is seeking an executive director who has experience managing industry groups, membership organizations or coalitions, and can set the organization up for long-term success. The executive director assists the board of directors in formulating the organization’s mission, vision, goals, objectives and related policies and is responsible for their implementation, as well as the management of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership

  • Assist board with strategic planning
  • Propose and develop short and long-term organizational goals, objectives, strategies, and policies and procedures
  • Create and implement action plans to achieve goals and ensure USSEC’s long term-stability, organizational innovation, and efficiency
  • Create and maintain a strong and effective working relationship with the board and broader membership to ensure organizational objectives are met
  • Create and implement member recruitment, management and retention plan(s), as well as member engagement strategies
  • Plan and execute annual meeting
  • Assist the board, committees and membership in developing public policy positions, manage decision-making process; and maintain records of policy positions

Financial Management

  • Prepare and monitor annual budget with Treasurer and Board of directors
  • Create or review accounting reports and monthly financials/reconciliation
  • Regularly present financial reports and fiscal status to the Board of Directors
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, including member dues invoicing
  • Manage grant reporting

Operations & Programs

  • Manage member database and (e)mail lists
  • Manage organizational calendar and meeting invites/notices
  • In conjunction with board and committee chairs, develop and distribute meeting agendas and minutes
  • Manage contracts with consultants and external entities
  • Direct and monitor work of legislative, regulatory, and communications consultants
  • Lead policy initiatives alongside members and lobbyists
  • Manage human resources activities
  • Manage PAC activity, including serving as Treasurer

Communications & Public Relations

  • Act as spokesperson for USSEC with the media and serve as primary representative of the organization at external meetings
  • Assist board, appropriate committee(s), and membership in creating and executing advocacy communications plan
  • Pursue opportunities to increase USSEC’s visibility and build relationships within Ohio’s policy-leader community, including:
    • Creating and delivering community-facing presentations
    • Helping build coalitions to support USSEC’s work
  • Report to the board and membership on organizational activities
  • Manage organizational brand; create and execute organizational marketing plan and collateral
    • Website
    • Social media
    • Handouts

Other duties as needed for this agile and responsive role

Position Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of organizational leadership, association management, or equivalent experience
  • Action oriented, self-starter with strong project management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and relationship-building skills
  • Polished verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Suite, Zoom, QuickBooks, etc.) and ability to learn new software quickly, as needed
  • Financial and budgetary skills; able to create and maintain organization-wide budget, as well as read and understand financial documents and communicate financial status to the Board
  • Knowledge of the state legislative process and government in general
  • Knowledge of the renewable energy industry

This is a full-time position with a pay range of $125,000-$150,000 (commensurate with experience) that reports to the board of directors. The position is based in the Columbus, Ohio area, is remote (USSEC does not currently have an office) and requires that the candidate owns a computer.
