Manager of Government Affairs

Position Summary:

Central Ohio is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic regions in the United States. As our region continues to grow, expecting nearly 90 residents to arrive every day for the next 20 years, the need for housing has become increasingly apparent.

For 80 years, the Building Industry Association of Central Ohio (BIA) has represented the residential construction industry in our region, focusing on partnering with stakeholders to create policies that allow our members to meet the housing needs within our community.

The BIA has created the position of manager of government affairs to work proactively on behalf of our members in advocating for housing creation throughout our region.

This position will work closely with BIA leadership to advance the association's housing creation agenda and effectively represent the 500 member companies of the BIA.

The ideal candidate will be an engaged learner with strong written and verbal communication skills and adept at conveying important communication transparently. The candidate must have a mission-driven focus on serving the needs of the BIA's members and the organization as we strive to create housing opportunities across our region and serve the residential construction industry for the next 80 years.

This position will report directly to the executive director of the BIA and collaborate with other members of the BIA team in a small-staff environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain effective lines of communication with local, state and national public officials regarding issues that impact the industry and association.
  • Coordinate, promote and participate in meetings held with government leaders, key staff and political candidates to advance the objectives of the association.
  • Provides staff support to the Builders & Developers Council, Multi-family Council, County Working Groups, BUILDPAC, Industry Action Fund and other committees and task forces as assigned by the executive director.
  • Attend and participate in government and community meetings and report to the members any issues affecting the industry.
  • Obtain proposed legislation and regulation for submission to committees for analysis and recommendations.
  • Establish and maintain a grassroots network of members to assist on critical legislative and regulatory issues.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with other groups and organizations and serve as a liaison between the local, state and national associations on public policy issues.
  • Maintain information files on issues and disseminate information to members as necessary.
  • Contribute to the association’s advocacy communication strategy through the creation of emails, articles, social media posts and other forms of communication.
  • Actively assist in key association events, programs and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the executive director.
  • Collaborate with other team members on multiple projects simultaneously in progress.
  • Function as a part of a highly cohesive, small-staff team and contribute to the overall success of the organization.
  • Provide excellent customer service to BIA members and collaborators.
  • Travel within the central Ohio region required, approximately 25% of the time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Position requires a minimum of three years of experience in government affairs, economic development, planning, journalism, or related activities, whether in the private or public sectors.
  • Must understand how government works; have knowledge and understanding of current political events and trends and have an understanding of how they potentially impact the residential construction industry.
  • Requires a professional demeanor and excellent speaking and writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and be looked to as a resource by various stakeholders are also required.
  • Ability to function in a dynamic, ambiguous environment is important, including the ability to help solve problems independently and in accordance with the values and issues identified by the Association.
  • Ability and willingness to manage complex subject matters/issues.
  • Capability and desire to handle multiple responsibilities under tight deadlines and high pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of cross-functional teams.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to provide the highest level of customer service and professionalism to BIA members and the community.
