Executive Leaders Need to Build a Foundation of Self-care
They need to prioritize emotional well-being
I recently had the honor of holding an important conversation about mental health among business leaders. While the discourse around mental health has gained awareness over the years, as an executive and a mother, the subject is more than topical--it's personal.
I've seen myself, my peers, and our clients increasingly blur the lines between hard work, sacrifice, and self-neglect. We live in a culture that applauds always being on, constantly available to everyone at all times in both our work and personal lives. Those of us in leadership positions often internalize this expectation to the detriment of our own well-being.
Particularly for women entrepreneurs and corporate executives, we assume significant responsibility at home and in the workplace, making striking a balance between our professional and personal lives extremely difficult. This tension is made more complex because, whether real or perceived, our professional success is closely entwined with our family's financial health. The burden of competing responsibilities means we can begin to lose sight of boundaries in service to the businesses and families we work so diligently to shepherd.
