This Company Created an ‘Easy Button’ for Sharing Information Securely

Virtru was built to give private companies the same security as government

John Ackerly was working on federal privacy legislation at the National Economic Council, a White House advisory group, when terrorists struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

“I saw firsthand the pain that happens when you can’t connect dots that should be connected,” says Ackerly, co-founder of encrypted email and secure file-sharing company Virtru. Meanwhile, the privacy protections for citizens’ data that he and his colleagues planned to lobby for legislation around went out the window with the passage of the Patriot Act. 

A few years later, Will, John’s brother, got a job as a cloud-security architect for the National Security Agency, devising ways to protect classified information.
