Ohio House Passes S.B. 1 that Would Ban DE&I Initiatives at Public Colleges

The bill's opponents consider it an attack on research and education

The Ohio House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 1, also known as the "Enact Advance Ohio Higher Education Act," during its Wednesday session.

The vote comes amid statewide protests, including one right outside the Ohio Statehouse on Wednesday, objecting to the legislation.

The bill aims to accomplish a litany of things, including prohibitions on usage of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education and prohibiting faculty from going on strike. The bill's sponsor purports it will enhance diversity of thought on campuses by moving discussions more to the center and including more conservative viewpoints. It also aims to prohibit universities and professors from practicing their First Amendment right, such as taking positions on controversial topics.
