The liquid workforce trend isn’t new. It was introduced in 2016 by Accenture. Since that time, the movement has mostly focused on advantages for businesses, striving to stay competitive in the lightning-fast changing market. A liquid workforce enables companies to reduce overhead in a pinch and adapt to arising economic challenges, scaling up and down fast because they use freelancers and gig workers.

According to Ryan Starks, head of growth at Rising Team, the shift to a liquid workforce is becoming more common. “In uncertain economic times, many businesses aim to stay lean by keeping full-time staff at a minimum and relying more heavily on freelance help in specific areas where the lift is needed."
