Recently, I was helping my son research apartments near the community college where he’s learning his trade. As we scrolled through rental listings, I was hit with an unexpected wave of uncertainty – not about his path, but about mine.
For nearly two decades, my career decisions have been filtered through one lens: what works best for our family. As he prepared to launch into his own life, I faced a question that hasn't come up in a long while. What do I want from my work?
The Shift
The last time I felt this disoriented, I was a new mother pulling myself away from a phone call to look – really look – at my eight-month-old son tugging on my pant leg. That moment I realized he needed me more than I needed the sense of self and purpose that came from my work. As someone that has (usually) loved what I do, that was completely unexpected.
