Workplace Incivility Costs U.S. Employers More than $2 Billion Daily

Negative staff members impact everyone

Question: Recently, I’ve heard stories about people encouraging companies to fire employees for comments they make about political topics on social media and at work. Someone anonymously reported one of my friends to her company for something she said regarding the Charlie Kirk shooting. Can companies fire people over their political statements or beliefs? – Pierce

Answer: Two things can be true: 1) Employees are free to hold and share political beliefs, and 2) Employers ‒ especially in “at-will” states ‒ generally have the right to not hire and to fire workers if those beliefs, or how they’re expressed, disrupt the workplace.

The reality is that most companies don’t make such decisions based on what an employee believes, but on how their behavior reflects on the organization and impacts others. It's not about holding an opinion; it’s about whether you treat colleagues with respect and contribute to a cohesive, productive environment.
