Ohio Legislature Passes Bill Restricting Bathroom Access for Transgender Students

The bill will now head to DeWine's desk for his signature

An Ohio bill that will ban transgender students from using bathrooms and locker rooms that fit their gender identity passed through the Statehouse on Wednesday.

House Bill 183 (the bathroom ban bill), sponsored by State Reps. Beth Lear, R-Galena, and Adam Bird, R-New Richmond, was woven into Senate Bill 104 as an amendment on the House floor over the summer and then S.B. 104 passed in the House. The Senate passed the bill Wednesday afternoon.

The bill pertains to public K-12 schools and institutions of higher education. It would not prohibit a school from having single-occupancy facilities and it would not apply to someone helping a person with a disability or a child younger than 10 years old being assisted by a parent, guardian, or family member.
