Trump Revokes Biden’s AI Oversight Order

Former President Joe Biden created guardrails for AI technology

Amid the flurry of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump after taking office this week was a repeal of former President Joe Biden’s guardrails for artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Biden's AI order from 2023 set in motion efforts by government agencies to study AI's impact on cybersecurity risks, education, the workplace and more.

Those reports are largely complete. However, one key provision of Biden's AI order that was still in effect until this week was a requirement that tech companies building AI models share details with the government about the workings of those systems before they go public.

Trump's action fulfills a campaign promise to do away with Biden's AI order, which he has described as "dangerous" and hindering AI innovation.

Trump began outlining his administration’s approach to AI by hosting a number of tech industry CEOs at the White House this week to announce a $500 billion plan to build as many as 20 new data centers to support AI projects. Trump's recent advocate, Elon Musk, disagreed publicly with his approach to supporting AI projects.
