A new pulse survey conducted by ASAE reveals that many associations are experiencing financial strain, operational disruptions and strategic uncertainties in the current political and regulatory environment. These findings highlight the complex and evolving landscape that associations must navigate as they continue to serve their industries and professions.
The pulse survey, launched earlier this month, is the first in a series of member polls ASAE is conducting as part of its Insight-as-a-Service initiative. This initiative was developed to provide associations with timely data and nonpartisan insights needed to shape their organizational strategies now and in the future.
The survey was distributed to approximately 3,200 CEOs of small, medium, and large associations across diverse industries and professions, with a total of 319 responses analyzed. While the majority of respondents reported experiencing negative impacts – such as reduced funding, decreased conference attendance, and complications surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives – others indicated neutral or even positive effects, underscoring the varied nature of the association sector.
Among the key findings:
“As associations navigate a shifting policy and funding landscape, the need for timely, actionable insights has never been greater,” said ASAE President and CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE. “We recognize that many associations are not directly impacted because they do not rely on federal funding. However, the survey findings reflect a broader spillover effect, as policy changes ripple across the association community, affecting operations, conferences and member engagement. Our goal is to equip association leaders with the data and resources necessary to make informed decisions, advocate effectively and continue advancing their missions.”
The survey results indicate that associations are actively reassessing their strategies, exploring alternative funding sources, and leveraging peer networks for shared learning and support. ASAE will continue monitoring these trends through future pulse surveys, ensuring association leaders have the information they need to respond effectively to evolving challenges.
