For the first time, officers at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) in London, Ohio are learning how to use drones in tactical situations — technology that law enforcement leaders say could save lives.
The training comes as more police departments across the country are adopting drone use in high-risk scenarios.
Last August, Columbus police used a drone during a SWAT operation to locate an armed suspect, Benjamin Wheeler. Body-worn camera video from the incident shows the drone in action. Wheeler went on to stab three officers, underscoring the dangers these teams face.
